Italian Federation president Gianni Petrucci said that the association aims to complete the 2019-2020 season in the country’s leagues once authorities give the green light for it. All sports events in the country have been suspended until Apri 3.
“Our intention, also hearing the presidents of the Leagues, is to resume the championships to demonstrate that life can continue. We will have to wait for the results of what the scientists and the Italian government will tell us. However, our will is to complete the season and different systems [for it] are being examined,” Petrucci said in an interview with Resto del Carlino, per Bologna Basket.
Italy has reported the most coronavirus cases and deaths outside China. As of Sunday (15/3) morning, the official number of casualties has risen to 1,441 while 21,157 people have been infected.
Olimpia Milano, Italy’s EuroLeague representative, went into quarantine last week after Real Madrid announced that one of its players (later revealed to be Trey Thompkins) tested positive for coronavirus. On March 12, Italian Serie A club Pesaro reported that two of its members tested positive for coronavirus.
