Virtus Bologna went through a transformation this past summer, most notably at the head coaching position as Sergio Scariolo returned to Europe from the NBA and took over the team, and the squad has already won their first trophy. They grabbed a 90-84 win over Olimpia Milano in the Italian SuperCup Final.
Mouhammadou Jaiteh gave immense trouble to the opposing bigs and led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists while shooting 9-12 from the field in 28 minutes he spent on the floor.
Alessandro Pajola followed 14 points and seven assists while Amar Alibegovic scored 13 as well. Kyle Weems had ten while Milos Teodosic dished out six assists to go along with his nine points. Marco Belinelli logged nine points as well.
For Milano, Shavon Shields and Sergio Rodriguez banked in 19 and 17 points as they tried to change the outcome and spark a comeback run from a 17-point deficit (66-49) in the third quarter but it didn’t help in the end. Devon Hall helped with 13 points while Nicolo Melli put on a double-double performance with ten points and ten assists.
Olimpia Milano stayed at four trophies coming from the Italian SuperCup, all in the past five years, while Virtus Bologna won the tournament for the first time since 1995 which was at the same time their only until now.
