Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez won’t continue in his position upon the completion of his contract, the Argentinian Federation announced. He managed the national team from 2015 until the 2021 Olympic games in what was his second stint as head coach after the one of 2005-2010.
“I go away happy and calm. A stage has been completed and I feel that a new coach must start another,” Hernandez said per the Argentinian Federation. “I enjoyed it a lot but it seems to me that there are times when the stages are fulfilled. And it’s time for a new process to start, I sincerely believe that.”
Hernandez leaves the post after leading Argentina to the silver medal in the 2019 World Cup, the gold medal in the 2019 PanAmerican Games and several other medals in the FIBA AmeriCup. In his previous run, Argentina won the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, among other distinctions.
Overall, Hernandez coached the most official games (116) than any one of his predecessors, while having the best winning percentage (72.4 – 84 wins for 32 losses).
