The German National Team has appointed Gordon Herbert as head coach with a two-year deal, the Federation officially announced Monday.
Herbert, 62, will lead the German selection at the EuroBasket 2022 and his first game as head coach will be at the World Cup Qualifier against Estonia on November 25, 2021.
“I am very honored to be able to coach the German national team. I am very happy about this opportunity. The association is run very professionally, and the infrastructure surrounding the national team is first-class. And of course, we have a fantastic group of players. Some very strong players over 30, many in their prime, and just as many young players pushing forward. After all, the EuroBasket next year is of course a great goal for Germany,” said Gordon Herbert about his new role.
Herbert spent the previous season at the helm of Avtodor in the VTB League, while he has worked for the national selection of Canada (as an assistant coach), Georgia (2005-07) and Finland’s U18 squad. He has also served as a head coach for ALBA Berlin, Fraport Skyliners, Aris and Elan Bearnais, among other teams and has gained NBA experience as an assistant in the Toronto Raptors (2008-09).
