Nikita Kurbanov is reaching the final stages of his playing career and the three-time EuroLeague champion decided that now is the time to retire from the Russian national team and leave the job to younger generations.
“About three weeks ago, we talked to Zoran Lukic. He honestly said: it would be interesting to work with you, but a little earlier, at the age of 30-32. It’s not about physical condition, that’s fine. But the path itself – selection through Europe to the World Cup, through the World Cup to the Olympics, a vigorous, stimulating three-year plan. If you come to the national team, then for the sake of these heights,” Kurbanov explained in an interview with Match TV and continued.
“However, I’m 35. I feel great, I can play, for example, the European Championship, but what will happen next, in a couple of years? So I said to Lukic: you start a cycle, create a new team. There are young people with whom you worked, who you can shape according to your concept. The guys will get a chance to open up, and for me, it was almost the most favorable moment to leave.”
“With all due respect, I have already turned over this page. Coming at 35 years old and cheering from the bench means taking someone else’s place. Sharing experience? But if the national team qualifies for the Olympics, then it will have its own experience. I sincerely wish good luck to those who will replace me, my story with the national team is over. Perhaps it could be brighter, and victories louder, but I did what I could, worked conscientiously. It’s time to say stop,” he said.
