Meo Sacchetti is no longer the head coach of the Italian national team as his contract was terminated, the Italian Basketball Federation announced Tuesday.
Sacchetti served as the head coach of the “Azzurri” since 2017 and counted a total of 50 games with the selection. He began his duties with the Italian NT at the 2019 FIBA World Cup where the nation finished in the 10th position and helped the team return to the Olympic tournament in Tokyo’s 2021 Olympics to finish in the 5th spot.
Italy has been selected as the co-host for the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket in September, along with the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Germany.
Olimpia Milano assistant coach Gianmarco Pozzecco is expected to take on head coaching duties in the Italian NT, according to reports by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Federation is on the lookout for their next head coach as they prepare to face the Netherlands for the finale of the first round of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers on July 4.
