The Italian Basketball Federation announced Thursday that Gianmarco Pozzecco is the new head coach of the selection, replacing Meo Sacchetti.
Pozzecco, Olimpia Milano’s assistant coach next to Ettore Messina, will make his debut on the Italian NT bench on June 25th in Trieste, when the nation will face Slovenia for a friendly game prior to the June-July FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
His first official game will take place in Almere on July 4th against the Netherlands, for the finale of the first round of the qualifiers windows.
Italy will play friendly games in August against France (August 12 and August 16), Serbia, and Germany or the Czech Republic (August 19-20, Hamburg tournament) and begin the second round of the World Cup qualifiers (pairings to be determined), before co-hosting the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket, which will take place from September 2 to 18 across Italy, Georgia, Czech Republic and Germany.
