Victor Wembanyama, a projected No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, will miss the upcoming EuroBasket due to an injury he suffered during the Jeep Elite playoffs, the French Basketball Federation announced.
Wembanyama sustained a muscle injury and was ruled out of the season while his now former team ASVEL Villeurbanne was playing in the French League semifinals. He was initially called to join the training camp French national team that begins Friday (29/7) but his latest medical examinations showed that he hasn’t recovered.
Per the French Federation, Wembanyama’s doctors and the doctors of the national team agreed that it’s not possible for the player to compete in this summer’s tournaments.
So far there are no plans by France coach Vincent Collet to replace the player. The national team will begin preparing for the EuroBasket and the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers with the following 16 players:
