Sasha Djordjevic is expected to be the new head coach of the Chinese national team according to a report by MaxBet Sport. Djordjevic last coached Fenerbahce Beko in Turkey and won the 2022 BSL championship before the club decided to terminate his contract last summer.

If the news is confirmed, then Djordjevic will return to coaching on an international level after his stint with the national team of his native Serbia. He had particular success at the helm of the “Orlovi”, leading them to the silver medal in the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2017 EuroBasket while personally accomplishing the unique achievement of having won medals in these competitions as both player and coach.

Djordjevic stepped down from his post with Serbia after the team finished fifth in the 2019 World Cup.

On a club level, Djordjevic has coached such teams as Panathinaikos Athens, Olimpia Milano, Virtus Bologna, Bayern Munich and Benetton Treviso. He won titles in Greece, Italy and Germany while Virtus also claimed the 2019 Basketball Champions League trophy, a few months after he joined the team.

China has yet to advance in the 2023 World Cup and is currently 4-2 in Group B of the Asia Qualifiers behind Australia (already qualified at 6-0), Japan (2-4) and Chinese Taipei (0-4).
