In a shocking turn of events, Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio has decided to put a stop to his professional career to take care of his mental health.
The Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) made an announcement on his behalf and “expressed its respect, admiration, and affection for Rubio.”
“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health. I want to thank all the support I have received from the FEB to understand my decision. Today La Familia makes more sense than ever. Thank you. I would ask that my privacy be respected so that I can face these moments and be able to give more information when the time is right,” Rubio stated.
Ricky Rubio was expected to be one of the key players in Sergio Scariolo’s team, aiming to reclaim the title of world champions, which they had achieved four years ago in China.
Having started his career at Joventut, Ricky Rubio later played for Barça from 2009 to 2011, being part of the squad that won the 2010 Euroleague in Paris. He then moved to the NBA in the summer of 2011 and has spent the last twelve seasons with various teams, including Minnesota Timberwolves (2011-2017 and 2020-2021), Utah Jazz (2017-2019), Phoenix Suns (2019-2020), and Cleveland Cavaliers (2021 to present).
