Following a disappointing performance in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the French National Team is changing its coaching staff. Laurent Foirest will not be renewed as an assistant coach, and Kenny Atkinson has been appointed as his replacement.
In an official announcement, it was stated, “With multiple experiences in France, Europe, and the NBA, Kenny Atkinson met the technical staff’s search criteria. He will bring real added value to the team of technicians already in place.”
Atkinson has a history with several French clubs during his playing career and initiated his coaching journey as an assistant with Paris Basket Racing, a club that eventually merged to become the team now known as Metropolitans 92.
After spending two years in the French capital, Atkinson transitioned to the NBA, serving as an assistant with the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks. He then assumed the head coaching position with the Brooklyn Nets. Following a four-year tenure with a record of 118-190, Atkinson joined the LA Clippers coaching staff as an assistant. Since 2021, he has been a part of the Golden State Warriors organization, contributing to their 2022 NBA championship victory.
In addition to the coaching changes, the French National Team has implemented further adjustments. Yann Barbitch has stepped down from the post of Deputy General Manager, and Frederic Sarre will assume his role.
