Five months after losing his kidney due to an injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup, Serbia forward Borisa Simanic hopes that it will take an additional maximum of four months to recover fully and be able to return to action.

“The results are normal so I will be able to start working physically. We have to do the tests. If it goes well, I’ll start practicing. I hope that in three or four months I will be in shape,” Simanic said to Telegraf.

In the World Cup game between Serbia and South Sudan, Simanic received a blow from Nuni Omot while trying to defend against him under the basket. He was operated on after the game but it was later determined that his kidney had to be removed “due to changes in kidney tissue vitality.”

In the aftermath of his ordeal, Simanic managed to return to Belgrade with the silver medal as Serbia finished the World Cup in the second place.

Regarding his future, Simanic mentioned that he’s uncertain if he will remain with ACB club Zaragoza. I have a contract with Zaragoza, I have one more year, I’m not sure I’ll stay, but I’m focused on recovery,” he said.
