Lenovo Tenerife guard Kyle Guy is working towards getting a Polish passport with the goal of joining the national team in the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games Qualifiers, Eurohoops can confirm. Chema de Lucas first reported about the possibility of Guy acquiring the passport.
Guy aims to be able to join Poland as the team’s naturalized player in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament of Valencia, Spain. Poland will face Finland and Bahamas in the Group Stage and, if they advance, one among Lebanon, Angola and hosts Spain in the semifinals. Only the tournament winner gets a spot in the Olympics.
If Guy obtains the passport, he will be replacing shooting guard AJ Slaughter on the Polish roster. Slaughter, also an American-born player with a similar offensive skillset to Guy, has joined Poland in several summer tournaments over the years, starting with the 2015 EuroBasket.
Right now, Guy and Tenerife are preparing for the upcoming Basketball Champions League Final Four that will take place in Belgrade on 26 – 28 of April. He’s has been averaging 20.6 points and 2.7 assists in nine BCL appearances this season, along with 14.0 points plus 2.2 assists in 14 ACB games.
Guy, a former NCAA champion in 2019 with the Virginia Cavaliers, began the season with Panathinaikos Athens, playing in the EuroLeague for the first time in his career. He was actually a teammate of Poland center Olek Balcerowski before parting ways with the club in January ahead of his move to Tenerife.
