According to what was reported by Jakub Wojczyński from the Polish outlet Onet, Malcolm Brogdon has applied for Polish citizenship, potentially being called up by Poland’s national team in the near future.
He has already sent papers to one of Poland’s consulates in the United States, waiting for President Andrzej Duda’s signature to confirm the procedures. Malcolm Brogdon’s wife has Polish roots, and the player visited the country back in 2021 to train in different cities.
After ending EuroBasket 2022 in 4th place, eliminating Luka Doncic’s Slovenia in the Quarter-Finals, they couldn’t make it to the 2023 FIBA World Cup. This summer, they will take place in Valencia’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament – which will also be attended by hosts Spain, Finland, Lebanon, Angola, and the Bahamas – after winning last year’s FIBA Pre-OQT in Gliwice.
Joining San Antonio Spurs’ forward Jeremy Sochan, the American guard will close the doors to the national team to both Gran Canaria’s AJ Slaughter and Lenovo Tenerife’s Kyle Guy, who also recently applied for Polish citizenship.
Averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in the regular season, the 31-year-old guard wasn’t surely enough to push the Portland Trail Blazers to this year’s NBA Playoffs, as the team ended in the last position in the Western Conference with a poor 21-61 record.
Concluding a valuable 5-year college experience with the Virginia Cavaliers, he was selected with the 36th pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2016 NBA Draft. He then moved to the Indiana Pacers in 2019, where he stayed for three seasons. In the last two years, he has played for Boston and Portland.
