Gianmarco Pozzecco and Italy are destined to continue together. As officially announced by the Italian Basketball Federation, the Atomic Fly is set to be coaching the Italian national team in 2025 as well.
Italy is coming off a disappointing campaign at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 in Puerto Rico, losing first to the hosts and then to Lithuania in the Semi-Finals.
Azzurri are currently 2-0 in their FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers after beating Turkey and Hungary in February. They’re seeking a qualification for the tournament, hoping to get revenge next year after losing in the Quarter-Finals to France in 2022.
That was Gianmarco Pozzecco’s first tournament in charge of Italy’s head coaching duties. He also led his country at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, and most recently at the FIBA OQT in San Juan.
Before replacing Romeo Sacchetti as Italy’s head coach in 2022, the 51-year-old established figure in International basketball spent most of his coaching career in Dinamo Sassari, winning the 2019 FIBA Europe Cup as well. He also served as Ettore Messina’s assistant in Milan.
