Alex Mumbru reportedly set to become the German national team’s head coach

German basketball is entering a new page of its recent history, saying officially goodbye to Gordon Herbert, craftsman of a successful three-tournament run with the national team.

According to both Marca and German reporter Rupert Fabig, the job should be appointed now to Alex Mumbru, who parted ways with Valencia prior to this summer after failing to reach the EuroLeague Playoffs in 2023-24. He was replaced by Pedro Martinez.

The former Valencia head coach would be called to an important exploit, trying to follow Gordon Hebert’s footsteps at the head of the German national team’s program. In the latest Olympic cycle, Germany became World Champion, won bronze at EuroBasket 2022, and finished fourth at Paris 2024.

Favorite to grab a medal and potentially contend gold against Team USA in Paris, Germany started the Lille group phase with a perfect 3-0 record, roughly eliminated Greece in the Quarter-Finals but lost to France in the Semi-Finals.

Announcing he wouldn’t continue coaching the national side even before the start of this summer’s Olympic Games, Gordon Herbert will now embrace a new challenge by coaching in the EuroLeague with Bayern Munich. He already coached in Germany with Frankfurt and ALBA Berlin.
