The German national basketball team, the 2023 FIBA World Cup winners, officially has a new head coach, as Alex Mumbrú has been named Gordon Herbert’s successor.

After finishing fourth at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Herbert’s term ended, and Germany acted quickly, announcing Mumbrú as the new head coach.

We were looking for a national coach who is hungry, competent, and highly motivated and who radiates that he really wants to work with the team. Álex Mumbrú convinced us of this very quickly. We are therefore very happy to be able to present Álex Mumbrú as the new national coach today. He has had an impressive playing career with great success and has also gained experience at the highest European level as head coach in Bilbao and Valencia. Our ideas are on the same page. Álex will now contact the players shortly and get them in the mood for the next period. We are very much looking forward to working with Álex Mumbrú,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss.

Herbert is joining Bayern Munich after three successful years, during which he led Germany to a 2022 EuroBasket bronze medal and a World Cup victory last year.

Mumbrú most recently coached Valencia in the ACB League and EuroLeague, and before that, he led Bilbao Basket from 2018 to 2022. The Spanish coach will be on the sidelines for the DBB for the first time in November, during a double match day in the European Championship qualification in and against Sweden.

I would like to thank you for your trust and am very excited to have the opportunity to be head coach of one of the best national teams in the world. My greatest wish is to help German basketball and quickly become a part of the German basketball family. Of course, I still have to wait quite a long time for the first training session with my new team, but there is a lot to do until then. I am very happy and ready to start working for German basketball,” Mumbru said.

Before turning to coaching, Mumbrú was part of Spain’s golden generation alongside the Gasol brothers, Juan Carlos Navarro and José Calderón, winning numerous medals, including the 2006 World Cup and 2009 EuroBasket gold, as well as a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
