As Steve Kerr is expected to step down as USA Basketball head coach, following the completion of the 2024 Olympic Games, the two main assistant coaches of the team are emerging as candidates to replace him.
As Mark Stein reports, either Erik Spoelstra or Tyronn Lue will be promoted from USA Basketball assistant to head coach, succeeding Kerr at the helm of the national team. It will be a similar transition to the previous one since Kerr was an assistant to Gregg Popovich before taking over, starting from the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Under Kerr, a star-packed Team USA won the gold medal in the 2024 Olympics, a year after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the World Championship. The next major summer tournament for USA Basketball will be in 2027 and the World Cup that will be held in Qatar.
