By speaking to the press during a coaching clinic in Logrono, Spanish national team coach Sergio Scariolo explained the situation of Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez who may miss the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.
As he said: “Winning an Olympic medal is a unique change in the life of an athlete and the members of the Spanish national team are lucky enough to have more career opportunities. Hopefully we know how to use those opportunities”. However, the situation with Gasol who had foot surgery on the 23rd of February is tricky: “Marc is excited about the Olympics, but his health is the first and most important thing. He has to recover 100% in order to be there. When the time comes, he will tell us what’s his situation, what’s the opinion of his club, because many factors should coincide and have influence. I wish it was only his will that mattered”.
Things are more clear in the condition of Rudy Fernandez who is ready to get back to action with Real Madrid. As Scariolo said: “I think he’ll be fine, but obviously he has a back that is not the best in the world”.
