Luka Doncic is attempting to recover his previous form in Slovenia following instructions set by Khimki Moscow Region’s strength and conditioning coach, Jure Drasklar. The 37-year-old Slovenian coach shared his plan regarding the Dallas Mavericks star with RIA Novosti.
“We have been working together for the last three weeks. Luka was previously in quarantine and trained individually at home,” he pointed out, “The last three weeks we have been working hard to prepare him for the resumption of the NBA season.”
The 2019-20 NBA season suspended in response to the coronavirus pandemic featured the reigning Rookie of the Year and 2020 All Star improving his averages to 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists per contest. The recent inactivity forced by the lengthy hiatus halted his sophomore run.
“Most players struggled to stay in shape. Doncic is no exception,” said Drasklar referring to Doncic and other players on the path towards NBA action resuming, “We understand his role in Dallas. Luka is improving every day. He puts in a lot of effort. He has completely dedicated himself to be ready.”
“He is not in the best shape, which is normal. NBA games will not be played before the end of July, so there is enough time to help him recover and get ready,” he added, “However, he undoubtedly would be ready to play right now”.
The next step is to reunite with his fellow Mavericks teammates. Ramping up his practice sessions in Slovenia is a solid start to build on, but returning to Dallas will firmly get him back on track.
“Training alone is not enough, he needs to begin practicing with his teammates,” explained Drakslar, “He can play with his group of countrymen in Slovenia, but it is not like training alongside his teammates in Dallas.”
Partnering with Doncic for the second year in a row, Drasklar is familiar with the personalized meals aiming to maintain the optimal body fat percentage.
“We have taken full control of Luka’s food,” he mentioned, “We have a whole plan, our own cook who prepares meals based on my instructions. Doncic practically does not eat anything except what we cook for him.”
The Mavericks were 40-27 until the season was paused on March 11. They are among the 22 teams scheduled to play eight additional regular season games to determine playoff seeding with leading star Doncic looking into his first postseason berth.
