Pau Gasol updated his status talking to Spanish reporters while launching a free online basketball academy, the Associated Press relays. The 39-year-old Spaniard big hopes to sign a contract for the 2020-21 season and go on to once again represent Spain in the Olympic Games moved to 2021, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“My intention is to play another season if the foot is OK, either in the NBA or in Europe,” he confirmed. “A final season with the Lakers is attractive, finishing at Barca is attractive, but you have to see the real possibilities and see what situation would be best for the circumstances of the moment.”
Barcelona was his first professional team. He called the Spanish powerhouse home from 1998 to 2001 prior to his move to the NBA. Since competed in 1,362 NBA games including 136 playoffs tilts that resulted in a couple of championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010.
Early in the 2019-20 season, Gasol was waived by the Portland Trail Blazers without playing a single game. His right foot injury prevented him from effectively launching one additional NBA campaign.
“I’m feeling good. I’ve had more time to recover,” he mentioned regarding his current injury status. “When I can start running and jumping I will have a lot more information to know for sure if the foot and the bone are consolidated for me to be playing professional basketball again.”
The well-experienced big plans to keep his options open and decide on his future by September or October.
