Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard said the team is supporting forward Davis Bertans’ decision to sit out the remainder of the NBA season.
“We certainly support his reasons for not playing. … We know how much Davis means to this team moving forward,” Sheppard said per The Athletic’s Fred Katz.
Bertans opted to skip the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida in order to not take injury risks ahead of free agency and after coming off the top season in his NBA career. The 27-year-old Latvian forward nearly doubled his scoring averages in 2019-2020, averaging a career-high 15.4 points (he had 8.0 in 2018-2019), 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 29.3 minutes – mostly off the bench – over 54 games.
Before heading to the NBA, Bertans fought through two ACL tear injuries: One in 2013 when he played with Partizan Belgrade and another in 2015 as a player of Baskonia.
