U.S. President Donald Trump called the NBA a “political organization” when he was asked to comment about the bubble protests that took the form of a game boycott by the Milwaukee Bucks following the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, by police.
“They’ve become like a political organization and that’s not a good thing,” Trump said. “I don’t think that’s a good thing for sports or for the country.”
Trump mentioned that he’s not much informed of the NBA players protesting against social/racial injustice and against police violence but he’s quite aware of the league’s ratings. “I don’t know much about the NBA protest. I know their ratings have been very bad because I think people are a little tired of the NBA, frankly. But I don’t know too much about the protests.”
The NBA postponed Wednesday’s and Thursday’s playoff games after the Bucks took the historic decision to sit out the game vs. the Orlando Magic to protest for Blake’s shooting, another case of police brutality against black people in the USA. Their decision led to a chain reaction that expanded to WNBA and baseball leagues.
