While the NBA has been reported to be targeting December 22 as the potential launch date of the 2020-21 season, some players, including league stars, may not be up to returning to action before mid-January.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, there’s a group of players (stars included) that are “pushing” for the new NBA season to begin on January 18, Martin Luther King Day. There’s an obvious symbolic undertone to the date the players are proposing in the aftermath of their social and racial justice protests during the Orlando bubble.
A January season launch will also serve towards players getting some extra time to rest. Los Angeles Lakers guard Danny Green has said that he believes that players won’t be fond of a December season start, while mentioning that he sees Lebron skipping a month if that happens.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver had previously predicted that January is the most likely month for the beginning of the 2020-2021 season.
