Giannis Antetokounmpo signing or not signing the supermax extension with the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason is the biggest topic of the 2021 NBA free agency. If the latter happenes, it may create a domino effect that can impact multiple teams, one of them being reining champions Los Angeles Lakers.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, a reason behind Anthony Davis waiting to re-sign with the Lakers could be about how Giannis will proceed with the Bucks. Windhorst said that if the back-to-back MVP doesn’t sign and becomes a free agent next season then Davis can choose to get a one-plus-one deal with a player option to help the Lakers become flexible with their salary cap during the 2021 free agency.
Here’s what Windhorst said:
“It’s unusual for AD to delay his re-signing for this long. One of the things he could be watching, is what Giannis does, if Giannis elects to sign. If Giannis suits himself up to be a free agent next year – I know it seems hard to believe that the Lakers could do it – but that might spur Anthony Davis to sign a one-year contract with a player option which is the kind of deal that Lebron James on to leave flexibility in Lakers payroll. There’s a lot of people watching Giannis Antetokounmpo right now.”
