Giannis Antetokounmpo has the chance to sign a record-breaking supermax contract, but he is not in a hurry. The Bucks leader talked to the local press for the first time since his return to Milwaukee after the off-season and in the big question about his contract, his answer was the following: “Right now, I am not focusing on that. I am just trying to focus on myself, how I can get better, how I can help my teammates be better, and how we can be ready on Saturday to play our first pre-season game”.
Giannis explained that he is leaving “those discussions” to his agent, Alex Saratsis, and the Bucks front office. “I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not the type of player that talks to his agent five times a week”, he explained, while also stating the obvious: “Obviously, I care about it. It’s a very big decision. One of the biggest decisions I’m going to make.”
However, when asked if he feels that this is the year that the Bucks must win the title and anything else would be considered a failure, he clarified: “I don’t believe it is a championship or bust situation and nobody wants to win a championship more than me. But you have to keep getting better step-by-step”.
Still, Giannis didn’t provide any details about the contract talks and he does not intend to do so: “I know this is big for the City of Milwaukee, the NBA world, and the media world. But I’m a private person. So when you ask me about the contract, my answers are going to be the same”.
Giannis can sign his supermax extension until the 21st of December, one day before the start of the 2020-21 NBA season.
