The Golden State Warriors announced that Alen Smailagic will undergo surgery and be out for a few weeks due to a torn right meniscus.
Smailagic didn’t play at all this season while last season, over 14 games, he averaged 4.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists in under ten minutes per game.
Golden State drafted the Serbian big in the 2019 NBA Draft (39th pick) after he spent the 2018-19 season in the G League for the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Marquese Chriss and Klay Thompson are already ruled out for the remainder of the season and, including Smailagic, the Warriors are one longer-term injury away from being able to apply for a hardship exception. The team also has a $9.3 million disabled player exception it can use following Thompson’s injury.
