Kyrie Irving talked about observing the Islamic Ramadan and what it means to him to take part in the Muslim custom.

Here’s what Irving said on this aspect of his personal life, following the Brooklyn Nets’ win over the Boston Celtics:

“All praises due to God, Allah for this. Because it’s just been a lot of outside… other people’s business all the time. For me, in terms of my faith and what I believe in, being part of the Muslim community and being committed to Islam and also just being committed to all races, cultures and religions. Just have an understanding and a respect, I want to put that as a foundation. There is such a divisive energy out here or it’s just been that way in our society, it’s just so divisive if you are  Muslim, Christian, Jew…”

“Bringing that into the game… I don’t want to, but obviously a lot of people have questions. Yes, am taking part in Ramadan with a lot of my Muslim brothers and sisters. It’s been an adjustment. Just being committed to my service to God, Allah and then continue on with whatever I’m guided with. I’m just happy to be part of my community and doing the right things. Fasting is definitely part of it. Obviously if you know anything about the Muslim community. Really blessed and grateful to be taking part in this.”

Fasting is an important part of Ramadan and requires practitioners (with certain exceptions) to abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset during the annual observance.
