Two Mavs players found themselves on the cover of NBA 2k22 with Luka Doncic soloing the standard edition while Dirk Nowitzki will join Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kevin Durant on the 75th-anniversary edition.
Nowitzki talked about Doncic during the face-scanning for the game and he had the highest praise possible for the Slovenian superstar.
“We’ve developed a great relationship of course. It’s a little sad that I only got to play with him for one year. He’s such a special talent. So good at reading the floor already at 21-22, an unbelievable all-around game. I would say he’s better than me now than I’ve ever been in my prime. That’s how good he is at 22 already,” Dirk said and added.
“It’s been a pleasure to be around him, he’s a good kid, he wants to do well. So that’s been fun and we’ve had a good relationship and we stay in touch. I’m always there for him if he needs something or has a question, if he’s going through something, obviously, I’ll try to help him out.”
He also mentioned some players that came before him and hope he did the same for the players that have come after him.
“There’ve been some European players that paved the way for me. Detlef Schrempf was an idol of mine, Kukoc, Petrovic. If I helped pave the way for these younger guys that come in now, that’s very humbling to hear. If I helped or inspired some guys coming from Europe to work hard, to get into basketball.”
Dirk also didn’t mind the company they put together with him for the game cover.
“I’m so thrilled or humbled to be among these unbelievable players in the history of our game. Kareem had an unblockable skyhook and really changed the game. KD is basically a two-guard in a seven-foot body that we’ve never seen and can score from anywhere on the court. To be mentioned in the company of these guys is an honor and humbling to me.”
