Following a great but short run with the Phoenix Suns, Chris Paul can decline his option for the 2021-22 season and become a free agent. Even if that’s the case, he can still stay in Phoenix with a new contract.
Team owner Robert Sarver discussed the situation as a guest in Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Wednesday. “I don’t know, it’s kind of interesting,” he confessed.
“I had some discussions with him after the season and said, ‘You’ve only been a part of the organization for nine months so there’s really not a lot of history here, but from a team perspective, it was my best season in 17 years and it was your best season in 16 years.’ So there’s really a lot there to keep the two of us together, the Suns and him, but he’s got a decision to make and a business decision and a family decision and all that kind of stuff,” he added.
Paul, 36, was traded to the Suns in November. He logged 18.3 points, 9.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per Regular Season game. He went on with 19.2 points, 8.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per playoffs tilt helping his side make it to the NBA Finals.
“Unfortunately, it’s not our decision, it’s his decision and he’ll have to decide whether he’s going to become a free agent or opt-in his contract. And we’ll know that in the next three days or something,” said Sarver setting the timeline on immediate developments.
