Ricky Rubio was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer and he has embarked on his tenth season in the NBA as the starting point guard for the franchise.
However, as Antoni Daimiel tells El Larguero, this could be Rubio’s last season in the NBA if he continues in Cleveland.
“It is a very complicated situation. Last year of contract (ends June 2022), in a team that does not have a chance to win, to get into the playoffs. We may be heading into Rubio’s last season in the NBA. Although he is a young player, if he ends the season in Cleveland, I would dare to say that he has options to return to Spain. I think it would be a return to Spain or even to Barcelona I would dare to say”, commented Daimiel.
Rubio, 30, is in the last year of the $51M, three-year contract he signed with the Phoenix Suns and arrives at the new season with the Cavs after being one of the great protagonists of Tokyo’s Olympics, where he led all scorers of the event.
The Spanish point guard went from the Phoenix Suns to the Oklahoma City Thunder in November 2020 and got traded to the Timberwolves two days after.
In his stint with Barcelona (2009-11), Rubio lifted the EuroLeague title in 2010 and helped the team to conquer the Spanish ACB championship in 2011.
