The NBA has launched an investigation into Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver following a story by ESPN on allegations of racial and misogynistic behavior against him.
ESPN published an article by Baxter Holmes that includes several comments and quotes by unnamed sources, plus former Phoenix coach Earl Watson, that describe a conduct of abuse, misogyny and racism by Sarver over the 17 years he has been an owner of the Suns franchise.
The Suns and Sarver denied the allegations via official statements.
“The allegations contained in today’s ESPN article are extremely serious and we have directed the Wachtell Lipton law firm to commence a comprehensive investigation,” NBA Executive Vice President, Communications Mike Bass said in a statement. “The NBA and WNBA remain committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace for all employees. Once the investigation is completed, its findings will provide the basis for any league action”
The NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) issues the following statement: “We are continuing to review the allegations in today’s ESPN story. We view these allegations as serious and applaud the League’s decision to conduct an investigation. We will defer any further comments until that process has been concluded.”
