After 18 active years in the NBA with no suspension under his belt, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been suspended for one game. This sanction is the result of an altercation between James and Detroit Pistons’ Isaiah Steward on Sunday night.
James has been suspended for “recklessly hitting” the Pistons big man in the face, per the NBA’s announcement. Steward has also been suspended for two games, for “escalating an on-court altercation by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing” James.
James will miss the upcoming Lakers‘ contest against the New York Knicks on the road on Tuesday, and will also lose $284,000 in salary, while Steward will sit out the games against the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks.
The incident happened when James and Stewart came into contact while fighting for position after a free throw by the Pistons, and the Lakers star elbowed Stewart’s face which initiated the altercation, although James seemed to try to apologize immediately. Nonetheless, Stewart attempted to rush to James multiple times as teammates, officials and security intervened in the scene.
