Following the home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans Friday, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd discussed the poor and correct timing to complain to referees.
“I would lean towards playing five on five a little bit more,” he mentioned and explained, “You’re not going to get any calls. Officials tend not to stop the game to change calls. So you’d have to understand that there’s a point in time in games, dead ball, to be able to talk to the officials.”
Luka Doncic was not singled out by Kidd but has been known to demand better calls while the ball is still in play. The Slovenian superstar inclined to get distracted has been an issue over his NBA career so far.
“If we’re lobbying for calls during live play, it puts us in harm’s way,” added Kidd, “Just some things have got to be a little bit more important. And I think they’ll get better at understanding as a team, when to talk to officials and when not to. Not just Luka.”
Doncic, 22, agreed. “I think he’s got a point and I’ve got to stop doing that,” he said after logging 21 points, ten rebounds, and seven assists in the losing effort against the Pels.
After being forced down to 11-10, the Mavericks will stay at home through the next two games of the 2021-22 Regular Season. The Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets are coming up at American Airlines Center, Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.
