Giannis Antetokounmpo was from his current status and level when he first entered the NBA, having to take all the steps, work hard and earn his nickname “The Greek Freak”. Warriors’ Steve Kerr hopes that will also be the case for the young talented Jonathan Kuminga who is currently under the coach’s wing.
“When you look at where Giannis is now, and you think about him as a rookie, you got to think about JK (Jonathan Kuminga). … Not much understanding of the NBA, not much understanding of what’s going on yet. But that’s exactly where Giannis was a decade ago,” Kerr said.
Warriors picked up Kuminga in the 2021 NBA Draft as the 7th overall pick. The potential is there but whether he will be able to reach the same heights as Giannis… time will tell. It’s a high bar after all.
The Greek Freak went from a bench player to a two-time MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and an NBA champion.
Whatever the selling turns out to be for Kuminga, he will first have to wait his turn and try to get out of the shadows of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and other veteran teammates.
