Brooklyn Nets star guard Kyrie Irving can’t participate in the home games of his team due to the New York city vaccine mandate but that may change relatively sooner than later.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a news conference that the vaccine mandate could be modified “in the next few weeks,” bringing a fair amount of optimism that Irving will be cleared to join the Nets in their Barclays Center matches.
As of now, Irving hasn’t been able to play in the Nets’ home games because the New York vaccine mandate requires athletes to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to use indoor facilities. The seven-time All-Star guard refused to take the vaccine before the 2021-22 season began and the Nets decided to sideline him for all team activities.
Irving, who has been staying unvaccinated, rejoined the squad in December, with Nets general manager Sean Marks saying that “… this is the best decision for this team at this juncture right now with what we’re dealing with.”
On January 6, Irving made his season debut by scoring 22 points in a win over the Indiana Pacers. He has been averaging 24.1 points, 5.4 assists and 4.8 rebounds over 14 games so far.
