Toronto Raptors power forward Scottie Barnes has been named 2021-22 NBA Rookie of the Year, the league announced Saturday. Barnes, 20, the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, received 48 first-place votes, 43 votes for second place and 9 for third in voting among 100 members of the media.
Barnes was just a cut above Cleveland Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley (363 votes), while Detroit Pistons’ Cade Cunningham followed in the third place with 153 votes. He is just the third Raptors player in history to win this honor behind Damon Stoudamire (1995-16) and Vince Carter (1998-99).
Barnes is posting averages of 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game this season while shooting over 49%. He was named KIA NBA Rookie of the Month twice in February and March/April in the Eastern Conference, while he was also selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend.
