Ben Simmons will undergo back surgery and will need three to four months of rehabilitation, according to ESPN. He is expected to be fully recovered before the preseason training camp.
The 25-year-old will undergo a microdiscectomy procedure which should address the pain located in a herniated disk in his lower back. Multiple back specialists were consulted before making the decision.
Simmons joined the Nets following his fallout with the Sixers and the Harden trade on February 10 but ended up not playing a single game for the whole 2021-22 campaign with either team.
Despite several attempts to get back on the court, he noticed the return of back pain and was sidelined further, eventually deciding to get the surgery.
Simmons and his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, met with Nets general manager Sean Marks and team officials, agreeing to continue to work together on Simmons’ physical and mental well-being in the ultimate effort to try and return him to the court next season.
The three-time All-Star and the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year has three years and $114 million left on his contract after this season.
