NBA Finals Game 3 winners usually capture the title

Breaking a 1-1 tie and taking a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals has been followed up by winning the championship in 32 of 39 such occasions through the history of the league. Culminating to a solid championship rate of 82.1%.

More on the official Postgame Notes following the Boston Celtics taking down the Golden State Warriors Wednesday evening, teams leading 2-1, regardless of winning or losing Game 3, have gone on to celebrate the championship 80.3% of the time. Out of the 61 NBA Finals situated at 2-1, a 49-12 record illustrates yet another theoretical advantage for the Celtics.

“The energy from our fans was just contagious,” Al Horford described playing at home in Game 3 after chipping in 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, “As soon as I saw that I said yeah it’s going to be different tonight.”

But nearly the same can be said about the Warriors since they have enjoyed bounce-back victories after all five losses in the ongoing postseason.
