Previewing the fight against MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura in Japan, Floyd Mayweather Jr. also discussed his path to becoming an owner of an NBA team on Monday.

“I’ve been talking to certain individuals for the last six months,” he revealed the timeline, “That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never come out and publicly talked about that with the media. My team has been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”

“I’ve been working on that for a good while now,” added Mayweather, “I’ve been working behind the scenes. I didn’t want to bring it out until it was engraved in stone.”

Mayweather, 45, an NBA fan and one of the wealthiest athletes is one of the most popular attractions in any sport. Regarding the projection of his relationship with the NBA, he did not share a location on the team in question but has been linked to a potential expansion team in Las Vegas. On a related note, LeBron James recently noted he would like to become an owner of an NBA team in Las Vegas.

However, the NBA is not actively considering an expansion to Las Vegas or any other city. Mayweather, James, or any other potential suitor must be patient before an actual opportunity surfaces.

The last expansion year dates back to 2004. The Charlotte Bobcats, now Charlotte Hornets, entering the playing field upped the number of NBA teams to 30.
