Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams has agreed on a long-term contract extension with the club according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Williams was signed by the Suns to a five-year deal in 2019 and their cooperation is now extended for “several more seasons.”
Under Williams, the Suns made the NBA Finals in 2021, in a run that marked their first trip to a championship series since 1993. In 2021-22, Phoenix had the best record in the NBA with 64 – 18 (the 64 wins being a record for the franchise) before falling to Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals.
Before Williams’ arrival, the Suns struggled to make the postseason and were absent from the playoffs for 10 straight seasons, from 2010-11 to 2019-20.
Williams won NBA Coach of the Year for the previous season and also earned the same award by his peers (National Basketball Coaches Association) for two years (2021, 2022) in a row.
