Tyler Dorsey signed a two-way deal with the Dallas Mavericks per Shams Charania, a decision taken in early July by the Greek-American guard. The Mavs made the addition official later Sunday.
While there are indications that one of the motives for Dorsey to take the deal is securing the NBA pension due to his number of NBA games played, it has to be noted that Dorsey also wanted to prove himself at the NBA level after three seasons in Europe with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Olympiacos.
That’s why he didn’t take either the offers of Olympiacos and Fenerbahce next season, which in both cases would pay him more than one million euros, a sum of money not comparable with the salary of a two-way deal.
Dorsey, 26, last played in the NBA during the 2018-19 season. Appearing in 104 games, all in the Regular Season, he averaged 6.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.1 blocks per contest between the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies. After concluding his NCAA career with the Ducks, he was selected by the Hawks with the 41st pick of the 2017 NBA draft.
Dorsey finished the 2021-22 season with Olympiacos and lifted both the Greek League title and the Greek Cup. He posted averages of 12.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.1 blocks across 38 EuroLeague contests and tapped 10.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game in the Greek Basket League
It remains to be seen if this two-way contract can transform into a regular guaranteed NBA deal soon.
