Oklahoma City Thunder rookie will sit out the 2022-23 season due to a Lisfranc injury to his right foot, the team announced Thursday.
Holmgren, 20, was injured in the CrawsOver Pro-Am event in Seattle on Saturday. The game was canceled in the second quarter due to wet spots on the court.
Per the press release: “The Oklahoma City Thunder announced today that forward Chet Holmgren has sustained a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Holmgren will miss the 2022-23 season. Further updates will be provided when appropriate.”
“Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season. We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus. We expect that same tenacity will carry him through this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation,” mentioned Thunder executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti in a statement.
The Minneapolis-born center was selected second overall in the 2022 NBA draft coming out of Gonzaga. Besides playing one year at the Bulldogs, he represented the USA in the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup capturing both the gold medal and the tournament MVP honors.
In the first steps as a member of the Thunder, Holmgren logged 14.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.8 blocks, and 2.0 steals over five appearances in the NBA 2K23 Summer League held in Las Vegas.
