As announced by Steven Portnoy from CBS News, the WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was previously sentenced to prison in Russia, has been freed in a prisoner swap and is now in US custody, according to five former U.S. officials.
According to the first information, also, to secure Griner’s return, US President Joe Biden has freed arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was found guilty of conspiring to sell AK-47s that would’ve been used to kill DEA agents.
The American President signed the commutation order cutting short Bout’s 25-year federal prison sentence.
The US had offered a 2-for-2, but Russia insisted on a 1-for-1. The deal was reached last Thursday. Joe Biden will have remarks shortly from the White House, but already made it official on Twitter:
Moments ago I spoke to Brittney Griner.
She is safe.
She is on a plane.
She is on her way home. pic.twitter.com/FmHgfzrcDT— President Biden (@POTUS) December 8, 2022
