The Toronto Raptors are interested in appointing current Virtus Bologna and Spanish national team boss, Sergio Scariolo, as their new head coach ahead of next season.
Should they hire the Italian, Scariolo would become only the second European in history to be the head coach of an NBA team. As he pointed out in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport the process is ongoing
“I cannot comment on a process that is still ongoing. I can and want to express all my gratitude towards Virtus and Toronto for the understanding and flexibility shown in considering the mutual reasons that emerged in this week of contacts” Scariolo said.
The only European coach to have been in charge of an NBA team was Igor Kokoskov, who had a brief stint at the Phoenix Suns.
The Raptors would like to have their coaching decision finalized before the June 22 NBA Draft. Scariolo, though, is scheduled to be competing in the Italian league final through at least June 16 and possibly longer.
