As announced on June 16, Ja Morant was suspended for 25 games by the NBA. Following the NBPA’s reaction to the matter and the player’s statement in which he said he will “spend the summer working on his mental health”, now an important detail regarding the financial issues this suspension brings comes out.
“I’d estimate he’s at least looking at $50 million in losses. Because he’s gonna face a no-pay for these twenty-five games, a no-pay for the eight games he already had this past year. There’s no doubt in my mind he would have been an All-NBA if he didn’t have this incident last season. He didn’t make the All-NBA team and that cost him $40 million in bonus money”, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on First Take.
“Not to mention the potential lost business with sponsorship. Just from a financial standpoint, it’s as bad of a penalty as we’ve seen in the history of professional sports. All of the consequences he’s facing in addition to his reputation”, the expert went on saying. Before being suspended, Ja Morant had 26.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in the 2022-23 NBA season.
