Victor Wembanyama’s NBA debut is on the horizon and it may be the reasons that endurance will be added early on his phenomenal pedigree.

“I’m going to be playing the Summer League,” the assumed No. 1 pick of Thursday’s NBA Draft told reporters at a press conference Wednesday, however this doesn’t mean that he will skip the FIBA World Cup with France.

Wembanyama expects to make also his debut with the senior French national team on a major FIBA tournament: “There’s time between the Summer League and the World Cup. It’s still my plan to make the World Cup. I’m waiting to agree with my franchise.”

Playing on both tournament wasn’t a given considering his full schedule of summer plans. Some believed the San Antonio Spurs would shut down Wembanyama for the Summer League and allow him to rest through July before heading to Indonesia in late August.

It remains to be seen how this arrangement will be executed in practice, since Wembanyama told Monaco players that he planned to play in Summer League a “little bit” when asked after the end of the French League Finals.

Here’s the full pre-draft media availability of Victor Wembanyama.
