Boston Celtics and Kristaps Porzingis are expected to finalize a two-year, approximately $60 million extension, per NBA reporter Chris Haynes, bounding him to Boston until the summer of 2026.
Porzingis gained international attention as a highly skilled and talented player before entering the NBA. He played professional basketball in Europe, primarily for the Spanish club CB Sevilla, before declaring for the NBA Draft.
Porzingis was selected as the fourth overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2015 NBA Draft. He quickly made an impact in the league, earning a reputation as a skilled and versatile big man. Standing at 7 feet 3 inches tall, Porzingis possesses a unique combination of size, shooting ability, and mobility.
During his time with the Knicks, Porzingis showcased his scoring ability, both inside and outside the paint. He became known for his shooting range, shot-blocking prowess, and ability to stretch the floor as a big man. Porzingis’ skill set earned him the nickname “The Unicorn” due to his rare combination of size and skills.
In January 2019, Porzingis was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He joined forces with fellow star player Luka Dončić, forming a promising duo for the Mavericks. While injuries have limited his playing time at times, Porzingis has continued to contribute to the team’s success.
However, on February 2022, the Mavericks traded Porzingis and a protected 2022 second-round pick to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. Still with the Wizards not making a splash in the playoffs, he was traded last week to the Celtics as part of a three-team deal that sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and Danilo Gallinari and Tyus Jones to Washington.
