San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich weighed in on the situation in Palestine in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks by Hamas against Israel and the current bombing of Gaza.
Here’s what Popovich said to The National News:
“Many people have tried to solve this problem, as you specifically talk about Palestine, for decades and it hasn’t happened. Talking about it is important because if we don’t, it goes away, nobody pays attention,”
So I think the more that it is talked about, the better. I don’t know how that solves it, I wish I had an answer but all our hearts just die when we see the horror that Hamas committed and then we feel the same when we see the bombs dropping killing children and civilians in Palestine.
As we speak, we know that there are people trying to figure this out. Should there be a ceasefire, should there not? How do we move forward? Is it a military solution? On and on and on. And we just hope that we can find leadership somehow. Because that’s the one thing I think is always lacking.”
Popovich, a five-time NBA champion and the winningest coach in the history of the league, has always been an outspoken individual, especially on racial and social justice issues. He was particularly critical of the Donald Trump presidency.
As of Thursday (2/11), there are 9,061 reported Palestinian casualties while the death toll among Israelis stand at approximately 1,400, including those killed in the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7. Since that day Israel launched a relentless bombing of Gaza that has resulted in numerous civilian deaths.
