The Philadelphia 76ers announced that their star Joel Embiid “will undergo a procedure to address a left meniscus injury in the coming days”, and while his return to action is not expected any time soon, his season might not be over per ESPN.

However, there’s no timetable yet for his return and of course, this turn of events might mean that he will not be able to make his debut with the US national team in the Paris Olympics as it was expected.

Embiid has a long medical history with knee injuries on both legs and without him the Sixers, who have currently dropped in the 5th spot of the East can’t make dreams of a championship run.

Embiid is leading the NBA in scoring with 35.3 points a game and was on pace to join Wilt Chamberlain as the only other player to average at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in an NBA season.

With him losing more games it’s certain that he will not reach the NBA’s 65-game minimum to earn postseason awards.

As for the FIBA competitions, Embiid could play also for France, after getting citizenship recently, and also for his native Cameroon, but he opted in the start of the season to pick USA, after getting also a US passport.

Embiid has not made yet his FIBA debut.
